Celebrating a World of Flavors

Happy Nutrition month! This years’ National Nutrition month theme is celebrating a world of flavors! Here is a list of yummy and different flavors from different cultures from around the world. Maybe give some of them a try!

  1. Cumin and Cayenne - Cumin is a spice which adds an earthy flavor and warmth to food. Cayenne is a type of pepper with a spicy taste. Both of these flavors are commonly used in Indian dishes! You can add a pinch of each of these spices to foods such as enchilada sauce, chili, fried chicken and even mac and cheese.

  1. Chili Powder- is the seasoning blend of dried, ground chiles and other spices. This powder is used to add pungency and flavor to a variety of dishes including soups, stews, and a variety of Latin dishes in which it is most commonly used.

  1. Ginger- Ginger can be added to flavor food in various ways! Fresh ginger can be peeled, sliced or grated and added to other ingredients. This strong and yummy flavoring is most used in Asian dishes and is great for adding taste to salad dressings, curries, meats and deserts such as ginger bread and gingersnaps.

  1. Bay Leaves- Bay leaves are a great way to add great flavor to food and have a floral and herbal scent to them! They are used most commonly in Mediterranean as well as American dishes. They are available whole either fresh or dried and can be added to slow-cooked recipes such as sauces and soups and then removed before serving.

  1. Umami Flavoring - This unique flavoring is typically found in high-protein foods and dishes and helps to not only flavor food in dishes but also helps curb appetite! Umami is commonly used in japanese dishes such as miso paste to cook miso soup, used for seasoning rubs for chicken, pork and steaks, and to flavor stews and gravies.

  1. Fish Sauce- Fish sauce is a fermented condiment that is a staple in many different cultures! A little bit of fish sauce can help boost salty and savory flavors to food such as sauteed greens, chickens, broths and pastas. Fish sauce is most commonly used in Southeast Asian cuisine especially in Chinese, Indonesian, Filipino, Vietnamese and Thai cultures.

  1. Dried Herbs such as thyme, oregano and mint are commonly used to make both sweet and savory dishes! The different foods range from rich sauces to light salads and herb-laced baked goods. You can also add mint to teas and iced drinks for a refreshing flavor.
